We need to focus on testing! Why? Because it can take 7 years (or many more!) to be diagnosed. That’s years spent sick, searching for answers to medical mysteries and missed diagnoses.
Why does it take so long? Many reasons can contribute, such as a lack of understanding from the general medical community and the hundreds (yes hundreds) of symptoms— many of which do not present as obvious diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract.
The following can all be symptoms of celiac: Unexplained rashes on the body, mouth sores, migraines, chronic viral illnesses, anemia, muscle or joint pain, extreme fatigue, and even anxiety or depression… to name a few. Often, this leads to misdiagnosis.
The danger of a misdiagnosis, or remaining undiagnosed, is the damage to the small intestine villi, which are responsible for nutrient absorption. This happens with celiac even if you do not have obvious stomach issues! More from

So, if you or anyone you know has a condition that will not subside, please ask for a blood test for celiac. We have to advocate for ourselves and our families to get tested.
